The 1971 Triumph Tiger 650 TR6R
I sold the Tiger in March of 2014
1971 was the first year of Oil In Frame (OIF) models for both the Triumph Tiger (TR6R) and the Bonneville (T120).
The 1971 Triumph Tiger is a 650cc Verticle Twin Cylinder with a Single 930 Amal Carburetor. Equipped with Drum Brakes, Megaphone Style Silencers, Chrome Rims.
All TR6's were known as "Triumph Tiger". There were 4 basic models: TR6R (Roadster & now the standard version), TR6C (with high pipes), TR6P (Police), & TR6RV (a Roadster with an optional 5-speed transmission). Engine & Frame Numbers ran from PE003157 to HE029817, built from November 11, 1970 to August 7, 1971.
At the close of the 1970 model year, Triumph decided that what the Triumph 650 needed was a way to carry its oil within the frame itself, devoid of an oil tank.
This new oil-bearing frame would have to be shared by the Triumph 650 twins & the BSA 500 and 650. It took too long & cost too much to finish, costing valuable production time. Then when it finally arrived, it was found that the engine couldn't be installed in the frame without first removing the rocker boxes.
Even this required new rocker boxes & head bolts. But, some 11th hour workshop engineering got it done, actually improving on the old design.
The new frame that started out in 1971 had a seat height of 34-1/2 inches, but was lowered to a more reasonable 32 inches.

My '71 Triumph Tiger sports a 1978 Bonneville paint scheme.
The original paint colors for the 1971 Tiger model was Pacific Blue and Polar White.
